Verified The Best Surf Lessons
So glad I found this listing and talked my friends into doing it with me. It was a battle because they’d done “surf lessons” before in Bali… Well, everyone found Richard’s approach and assistance to be well worth giving it another go! Richard is incredibly patient, creates a fun environment, and is determined to get you up. He’s a great instructor with a radiant personality. I’m recommending him to everyone who finds their way to the corner of Santa Teresa! I was relieved that the lesson was in Playa Hermosa, because S.Teresa has ROUGH breaks (and too public a place to stumble as a beginner). If you’re worried about getting around, look into the new affordable bus/shuttle in the area. You can coordinate a pickup/drop off with them, but also the walk to/from on the beach isn’t totally terrible if necessary. ~Pura Vida~

Verified Best Surfing Lesson
Today we had our first surfing lesson and were a bit afraid first. After meeting the greatest teacher, Richard, we became more calm. Richard definitely responded individually and was friendly and calm the whole time, so we always felt comfortable. He explained everything until we understood it and answered all questions professionally. He never lost his sense of humor - the ice was quickly broken. However, Richard tried to give us the feeling on the board - always breathing in and out, relaxing, focusing and going with the wave. Thanks to Richard, we had incredible success today and will continue to practice. Thank you, Richard, for this great experience. Miri

Richard was absolutely great, covering all the critical basics, including safety, being patient and encouraging every step of the way. This was my first surfing lesson ever and I managed to ride my first couple of waves, thanks in big part to his skills. I couldn't have left happier.

This was our second time in Costa Rica and second time booking with Richard!! He is a kind, patient, and incredibly knowledgeable surf instructor and person! He immersed himself in the water with us to give pointers and encouragement. He practices safe surfing techniques while also giving the best vibes possible!   Richard and Juan were excellent teachers for us beginner surfers. They really took time to enforce safety in the water, the best way to fall, awareness of hazards of the specific beach, making sure you have a reference point on the beach, all this before getting into the water. We then practiced good form on the beach so we knew how to apply it once in the water. We then were taught how to deal with the board as waves approached. Once in place we attempted to apply the teachings and form they had delivered with Juan and Richard getting us set up as the wave approached, it was tough but we were able to catch quite a few waves…it was simply addictive. At the end I could see myself understanding the very basics of the pop up and how body position on the board impacts you balance and speed.

  Min kæreste og jeg havde booket en tid til at surfe hos Richard. Vi blev mødt med et stort smil og en god energi. Vi var de eneste to, der deltog i surfing lektionen, og derfor var det meget tilpasset til vores niveau.   It’s a group lesson, not private- but in the end you could potentially get as much coaching as a private lesson. There wasn’t any GoPro thing going on as advertised, so make sure to ask if that’s what you want. Appreciated the coconut water freshly taken from the tree in the end

Things to know:	Guests ages 6 and up can attend. This is a group class. There will be one instructor per two or three students. depending on the conditions. The activity level for this experience is moderate. The skill level for this experience is beginner.
Preventions:	Not recommended for travelers with back problems. Not recommended for pregnant travelers. Not recommended for travelers with heart problems or other serious medical conditions. Not allowed to take any or show up under any drugs or sustances that affect the class performance. Not wheelchair accessible.
